- Red Spinel: Spinel: isotropic like garnet but RI ~1.718 vs pyrope ~1.746; different absorption spectrum.
- Red Glass: Isotropic; gas bubbles or swirl marks under loupe; conchoidal fracture; SG varies but no garnet inclusions.
